Evening all, this will be the start of my short run of articles that talk about very obscure and rare consoles, enjoy!
Firstly i am going to talk about an obscure console, the Amstrad GX4000. This was Amstrads first and only attempt to enter the console market, but they were struck down for a number of reasons, but first the history.
The console was released in 1990 and was based on CPC technology. The GX4000 was at its core a modified CPC 6128 computer, allowing the console to be compatible was CPPC plus software. The console intitally recieved favourable reviews, as it had impressive graphics and sound, a huge colour pallete of 4096, hardware sprites and hardware scrolling. It retailed for £99 and came bundled with a driving game “Burnin Rubber”
One of the major factors in all consoles that fail is the games. While not necessarily bad, there was not much support for the console, and fewer than 40 games were made for the console, all produced by UK based companies auch as Ocean and U.S.Gold. Notable games were Burnin Rubber, RoboCop 2, Pang, Plotting, Navy Seals and Switchblade. One of the main problems related with most of the games just being CPC games put on a cartridge, and the price upgraded to £25 from £3.99 on a cassette.
The console was based with 8 bit technology, and was almsot instantly superseded by the MegaDrive (genesis), ans the SNES later. A lot of people agree that the machine was at least techinically capable, but Amstrad not having the marketing budget of the giants Nintedo and Sega. This led to commercial failure, and UKs last hope at a video game console smashed, in just a few months.
Console 2, Casio Loopy
This console is very unique for a number of reasons. Other than the fact that it is pretty unknown and released exclusively for the Japanese market, it had some very strange marketing and techinical decisions. It is also the first 32 bit unknown console on my blog.
The first, and most blatently obvious, is that it was targeted almost directly for the female market, probably pre-teen. This is very strange from a marketing point of view, because in the mainstream consoles all the way up to the Wii, games consoles have been marketed towards the male market, with only a few games on some systems that are aimed at both genders.
The second most unique thing about this system is that it includes a thermal colour printer that can make stickers of in-game screenshots, something very different on the gaming console scene. This console actually had a peripheral, “Magical Shop”. This add-on allowed you to take images from other devices such as VCR players and DVD players, and add text to them, subsequently printing them as stickers on the colour printer.
The female aiming of this system meant that its measly library of 10 games were either a dating sim, or a dress-up game, or a sticker maker. These games would not have interested most male and hardcore gamers, solidifying the fact that it was a “little girls” console.
This console only had one controller port, used cartridges for its media form and had a 32-bit RISC SH-1 CPU. This was never meant to be a very big console, and it succeeded in that front entirely.
List of games =
-Bow-wow Puppy love story
-HARIHARI seal paradise
-I want a room in Loopy town!!
-Lupiton`s Wonder Palette
-Mr Chakra`s charm paradise
Red here with a brand new review, this time we’re going into music. Today i’ll be reviewing one of my favorite bands ever new album The Avett Brothers’ I and Love and You so lets get this rolling.
The album features many different styles of songs ranging from the old country styles of Country was their first album to their alternative rock sounding Emotionalism album. From the reminiscent tracks I and Love and You and Head full of doubt road full of promise, to the rock sounds of The Perfect Space and Kickdrum heart. The album puts them to their full potential as producer Rick Rubin leads the way.
The songlist begins with reminiscent tales and slow melodies. Their title track I and Love and You starts it off and is one of the best tracks in the album. It leads to the new sounds of The Avett Brothers works with another one of the prominent tracks And it spread.
The song enters with a rocking feel with Seth Avett leading vocals. Then into possibly the best track on the album The Perfect Space
a tale about just wanting to be normal which almost anyone could relate with. Beginning with a soft piano melody with Scott Avett’s vocals and both brothers’ harmonies into a concentrated energy part which in my opinion is excellent live.
The brothers are releasing a video series about the album which is set to release next week on the 29th. It is included in 13 video parts to go along with the number of songs on the album. NPR is currently streaming the entire album so if you want a taste of it go check it out. The Avett Brothers have been promoting the album like crap right now, going to live shows across the nation (3 of which I was fotunate enough to go to) and advertising it frequently.
One of the most memorable tracks is probably Kickdrum Heart in which both brothers trade parts while playing to a fast tempo piano and drums with a soft interlude and great ending. The song is great for anyone to enjoy and you may find your self tapping your feet without even knowing it. One of the songs “A Slight Figure of Speech” that might be considered a tribute to the beatles with an upbeat guitar and vocalizing harmonies, with possibly one of the best melodies of all time with the fast trading vocals like “Talk on indolence’s” intro. While songs like Laundry room balance everything out with slow tempos and emotional lyrics.
Overall the album is by far their best work. The album contains a perfect songlist along with the harmonies they’re known for and the rocking acoustics along with piano ballads. This brings something new to the table along with older sounds to please hardcore fans such as myself. If you ever have the chance please pick up this album for this is possibly the album to watch for. Hell it’s already my album of the year 2009. Do yourself a favor and pick this up, it releases on the 29th and after that if your not completely a fan yet go see a live show and treat yourself to one of the greatest concerts you’ll ever see.
+Great new sound
+Old sounds to keep you interested
– WHAT NEGATIVE!?!?
Overall 10/10 PERFECT BUY IT NOW!!
This is red signing off.
Hey guys red back with another fantastic review.Sorry for the absence my internet was out. Now let’s check out PS3 system software v3.00!!!
When booting up your PS3 after the update you no longer hear the same tuning of the band with the words
“Sony Computer Entertainment.” What you now see and hear is the new “sparkly” background with the PS family logo and the new PS3 logo associated with the ugly slim.
After the intro sequence your immediately taken to the “What’s new” section. It features currently quick links to Playstation Home, PSP Go’s website, recently played games, and redesigned PS store cards along with many more links.
As you sign in to your account you notice the words and logos are way bigger, it’s not really that big of a deal but I kind of dont like it, makes it look like an SD tv. When heading to your friends list you see gray boxes around your friends list with their comments in them. Not too much of a big deal but it just isn’t too aesthetically pleasing.
Going into your games section you now see there is a PS store logo in the section. This logo leads to quick links for popular games in the store at the moment like Fat princess, or upcoming retail games like MAG. Everything else remains the same, however when starting up a game you don’t see the original PS3 logo and you don’t hear the chime.
Going into the Video section there’s another logo for the PS store but this time for movies. With what’s popular at the moment.
Everything else remains the same.
The rest has pretty much remained the same but what really impressed me was the dynamic themes. After purchasing the LBP theme it’s now my favorite theme on the PS3. Everything is active and it’s fun to just watch sackboy run.
Going more into detail you now have more avatars. The regular avatars are there but now you have premium ones with your regular ones, the avatars are now also split up into different categories.
The new ticker is a nice feature it keeps me up to date, alerts me when I have a message and tells me how many friends are online.
Overall while having a few flaws they really are overshadowed by the new firmwares great features.
+Awesome dynamic themes
-Letter/logos could be smaller
-I miss the intros when playing a game
8.5/10 A.K.A Pretty cool
This is redscout64 signing off.
Note from Sen – The uk version also gets a new direct link to a ps3 version of BBC Iplayer. Its not very good, quality is better on the pc, stick to the pc version if you plan to use it.
As it turns out Nintendo isn’t a big innovator after all. Microsoft was thinking of the same thing. They announced emotion reading in games before Nintendo let me assume what they would do. Peter Molyneux promised us that Milo will read our emotions.
When we all first Saw Milo we said “that’s creepy”, “ROFLMAO MICROSOFT IS SKYNET LOLOLOLOL” or “If we fapped in front of him?” It was funny but we never got around to understanding what Milo will do. Neither do I. But the technology is amazing. A very powerful AI that we would hope to have in an FPS, an amazing interface that allows great interaction with the digital world and the feature to recognize emotions.
It looks like Milo will be friendlier for developers than the Wii Vitality Sensor will be. You could use both hands; your control interface isn’t limited to what would be just one Wii mote. I would say the technology is better but we don’t know if the Wii vitality sensor just reads your heart beat or more.
If we used the technology of Milo for real games it could be great fun and make gaming a more artistic medium. We could get a change of pace and style in game play and such. But because Milo can tell emotions though facial expressions you could add more emotions like sad or confused. In the case of sadness if you aren’t sad enough the game could make the situation more depressing. This could be though slight change of color or change of tone in voice. I am not very sure how. But I expect Peter Molyneux to make promised in future titles that will blow my minds off. What future titles you say? Well maybe Fable 3? Fable is a franchise that established it self by changing the world around you though your decisions. If emotions could change the situation in battle? Just maybe. If I were the developer, I would try to do it.
To me Milo is just a tech demo for Project Natal’s Emotion reading. What is next to come is up to the developers. You have read this and don’t be surprised when Peter Molyneux makes such a promise. And as a veteran hardcore gamer don’t expect him to keep it.
This is HSG’s first (of possibly many) anime review, and I have to say, I’m rather pleased to be the first reviewer to start this (yes kids, HSG knows about things other than games, it’s true :O 🙂
So, to break the ice (I swear I’ve used this ‘splosive remark before in another ‘splosive review), I’m going to start off with “Requiem for the Phantom”
Requiem of the Phantom is a name that has been floating around the internet for years, in games, video novels and more. The most recent “phantom” creation however, has been the ‘Requiem of the Phantom’ anime series, which is currently an on-going series, and as I speak, the 20th episode has been released (these episodes have been released weekly).
It is much darker and much more serious than your typical anime, and is not to be compared to your more bright coloured, slightly more childish animes like ‘Naruto’.
You follow the lives of Zwei (Reiji Azuma) and Ein (Elen). Zwei witnesses a murder commited by Ein, but instead of being killed, he is brainwashed, due to his incredible instinct to survive.
Ein is the murderer he witnesses, and is called the “top sniper in Inferno” (Inferno being a huge Mafia Syndicate, trying to control the U.S) With Zwei brainwashed, together they work for Inferno, but soom become caught up in a battle for power on all sides.
I don’t want to give too much away about the plot, but believe me, it is definitely worth watching, and I’m loving every second of it 🙂
(Note as this stage it is subbing only) 🙂
